Welcome to our website, designed and catering for those interested in the craft of rag rug making.
If you would like to use the skills of hooking and prodding in the traditional way to make hard wearing rugs you will find a wide range of hooks and prodders, base fabrics, books, videos (DVD'S) and tough cutting equipment to allow you to enjoy this craft. Perhaps you would prefer to explore how new materials, tools and techniques can be adapted to create a wider range of furnishings, wearable art and jewellery. Many artists are now using rag rug techniques combined with the exciting colour ranges and textures of recycled materials to produce wall hangings that can be exhibited alongside more conventional art. Much of this has not yet reached the books but through our e-newsletter you will find a route to meeting others who share your interest, some tips and wrinkles, plus news about 'Ruggy' events. It will also have news of any special offers.
Our shop covers the most regularly wanted items. It has changed very little over the years as our range of hand-turned hooks range from 2mm - 10mm in diameter covers most needs. From fine and detailed work to the larger scale, fast growing projects there are different weights and sizes of tools to suit most needs. Because the are hooks are craftsman made it is possible to have ’specials’ made if you require something unusual - please ask.
Wool remains the first choice for floor rugs. It takes colour beautifully; is hard wearing; warm to the touch; keeps its good looks and insulates from both cold and noise. It is increasingly costly and hard to find so the recycling of woollen garments (both knitted and woven) can be valued for many reasons other than economy. It takes more time to recycle than to use new material. However, by over-dyeing or melding, felting looser weaves and finding quicker ways of preparing the strips you can gain great control over your raw materials. You can produce unique items that reflect your own tastes and lifestyles rather than the mass produced. For items that do not need to be laundered almost anything flexible can be tried with some amazing results. We do stock latch-hooks, punch-needles, speed needles, locker-hooks which are not traditional rag rug tools but do give interesting textures. Today, the experimental approach is encouraged and ideas borrowed from other crafts.
This year has shown a considerable jump in interest in recycling with eco Schools and colleges leading the way. Many creative ideas could be spread around so do take photos and send us details if you are willing to share.
All our students know they can ask for help and advice if they find a problem so do phone or e mail and we’ll help if we can. Enjoy.
