Image, tip of the month

Wool fabrics and jumpers are ideal for using in floor rugs as they wear well, are warm to the touch, bounce back after treading, insulate from the cold and dye beautifully using acid dyes. If you find they fray or ravel try putting them through the hot cycle in your washing machine. This will felt them slightly and stop this happening.

Rag Rug Romp

Many thanks to Alison Brown for providing the venue in Glasgow for our first Summer School held north of the border. Her lovely home proved an ideal location as unusual artistic treasures abound and inspire any project.

One student, Tara, came all the way from California, USA where she teaches rug making at a Creative Growth Project. She wanted to learn the more traditional and hands on way of making rugs as they currently use a speed needle. All students had something to offer so we were able to explore some approaches to our work that used techniques from other textile crafts. We were really fortunate in persuading Heather Ritchie from Yorkshire who teaches internationally to share the tuition so there were few questions that could not be answered. One day we played with dyeing in the microwave-oven. This encouraged students to try this for themselves and to gain confidence in controlling the colours they use. We are planning another ROMP in October so let Mary know if you are interested.

New Shop Section

We needed to change the old shop, or catalogue, section of the website and you will find the new improved version on our lovely new site.

Apart from looking and feeling much better, you will find that one of the major improvements isn't perhaps immediately obvious. For example, if you click on items in the shop section you can see an enlarged image with more description. This enables all items but especially the Hessians and other base fabrics to be shown much more clearly and with a description that just wasn't previously possible.

Postage and Packing Charges

Ever since the Post Office has changed the way it charges for sending items, we have been struggling to find a fair way of charging for postage and packing. We now think we may have found the answer. We have devised postage charges based upon a total order value, you'll find the grid with the charges here. That said, however, base materials are very heavy. Our ranges of cutting mats and rulers are not so heavy, but are very bulky. The new Post Office charges have meant that these have been the items causing us most problems. The only way we can see to work this fairly is to apply a £1.50 per unit surcharge to cover the disproportionate postage charges these items command. We're sure you'll agree that this sytem is a lot fairer and should work out better for our valued customers also. We will be keeping a watch on this and ensuring ther figues are fair and amending them if required. Any feed-back or suggestions will be very much welcomed, you can contact us here.
